One Way Flights

Personal Reflection: One-Way Flights

Sometimes life asks us to move forward without promising what’s next.

I sat across from my massage therapist after a massage during my visit back to Wichita. She asked, “Where do you head next?”

I responded with the words I’d been practicing, “I’ll head to St. Louis to stay with my sister’s family, Denver to stay with my brother’s family, Los Angeles, Kauai'i by mid-November, and then I have no clue.”

“You sure do love your one-way flights,” she said with a little laugh. I hugged her and left, but her words stayed with me, landing something I had been feeling, but not yet able to fully articulate.

Since selling my house in May 2024, every flight I have booked has been one-way. Even the summer before I left for my year abroad, I was moving in this way. In that time, I have traveled to many of the same locations multiple times: Denver, St. Louis, Wichita, Tulsa. On each visit, though, I have been a different iteration of myself.

This happens for all of us as we move through life. We’re always shedding and gathering, releasing and reforming. When we step away and return, the shifts reveal themselves more clearly.

For me, this shows up most clearly in relationships, in the subtle reflections offered back through conversation. Sometimes it’s a comment: “You seem _______er.” Often it’s a lingering pause, a gaze, a tilt of the head. That moment when a loved one notices a shift that neither of us can quite name yet.

And I know the next time I am in each of these locations, something new and different will be true, too.

What have your own “one-way flights” been lately? What choices have moved you forward without knowing what you’d return to? If you’re in a season of change, may this be your reminder that movement, even without a map or destination, is still progress.

Baby Steps & Accountability

Expanding our perspective, identifying options, and taking even the smallest actions can gently shift us back into a sense of empowerment, especially when life feels uncertain or out of control.

Just like booking a one-way flight, sometimes the next step doesn’t have to be fully mapped out. This week, I invite you to take one baby step. No step is too small; each action builds momentum and trust in your own direction.

If you’d like a little accountability, share your baby step and when you’ll take it with someone you trust. You’re always welcome to reply to this email and share it with me, too. I love celebrating forward movement in any form.

If you would like a partner to hold space and support you in your own adventure, I currently have openings for 1:1 coaching. Together, we can explore where you are headed and identify the baby steps that might help you build momentum. You’re welcome to book a free 30-minute discovery call to learn more about how coaching could support you on your journey.

With so much love,

Hannah Podschun
